Phantom Inland Championship 2023
What an incredible weekend, Chase SC hosted the Phantom class for their Inland Championship.
Graham Flynn our race officer was tasked with a tricky forecast, 28 competitors from across the country gathered for the P&B sponsored event.
The race committee briefed the competitors that racing would be 3 back to back races with a possible fourth due to the Sunday forecast looking decidedly challenging,
Four races were completed on Saturday with some excellent tight racing, there were different race winners in each race and the odd protest or two which made for a interesting day on Sunday. A special mention must go to Taxi(Andy Davies) from HD sails who chaired the protest hearing. Who better than the current National Champion.
There was excellent entertainment on the evening by a local band with plenty of excellent real ales on offer in the bar, the galley supplied some tasty treats after racing and there was even a fish and chip van on site for the competitors to enjoy.
Some may have had sore heads in the morning but these were soon soaked up by another suburb breakfast in the galley.
Once again the wind decided to play its games with some super shifts causing the race committee to reset a number of times, with the leaders very tight on points the last race needed to be right but the wind once again decided to do what it wanted!
After a delay and a very focused race committee the course was set, it all came down to count back but Rob Cook just piped Ben Hawkes and Carl Gibbon for the title. After a short delay due to another protest the prize giving could take place.
Rob thanked the club, the volunteers, the race committee and all the competitors, with a special mention to the shore crew (Hopkins family and helpers) for being so organised in helping the competitors after a long day on the water.
