Musings from the Commodore - June

Published 23:43 on 21 Jul 2022

Wow, how time flies! The past 7 weeks since I jumped (or rather hopped) into the Commodores chair here at Chase have been something of a whirlwind, it's a bit like being back at work to be honest - so much for any early retirement plans!

It's a great privilege to work with a fantastic team of people, all of them volunteers, all giving freely of their time and all totally dedicated to the same thing, keeping Chase Sailing Club the best in the area! I'd like to take this opportunity to personally thank the outgoing Commodore Mr Stuart Green for his stint in the chair, trying to run any organisation through the dreaded Covid period could not have been easy for anyone, and look forward to working with him in his new role as Rear Commodore. Thanks Stu!

We have also welcomed some new members to the Committee for this season. Nathan Vyse has stepped up to the plate as our new Principal Training Officer and we look forward to putting on some great courses for both new and existing members to gain their sailing spurs in the coming months. Russ Lutwyche is doing a sterling job as Membership Secretary, welcoming new people to the Club as well as getting to grips with the finer points of our new Management System.

Welcome on board chaps.

We've spent long hours bringing the new Sailing Club Manager up to speed but I for one firmly believe we will see its benefits before long and over time it will help us put on some exciting events and attract even more new members. Huge thanks here go to Mark Buckingham, Steve Shepherd, and Michelle Evans who along with Dave Watkins and yours humbly, are the system administrators breathing life into the machine. You can now get all the latest Club news on our new website, the Events Calendar is particularly useful I find, and there's loads more interesting and useful information to keep you up to speed.

There's loads of stuff going on in the background, in particular Gill Boulter (Hon Treasurer) is working on a new Club Bank account as the old one doesn't support internet banking (what was life like before that - I vaguely remember)!!

You may have joined the recent work Party, what a great day and a massive thank you to all that helped out. Our Compound Manager Paul Batchelor and Bosun Rob Slack were both in the thick of things bringing the Club grounds and boats up to spec for the summer season ahead.

I'd like to thank Dave Pickering, Libby Constance, Richard Thompson and Neil Davies who have rotated off the Committee for their sterling efforts over the last few years, much appreciated.

Last but not least, I have tried to hit the ground running but the landing would have been so much harder but for the fabulous assistance and guidance I have received from the Vice Commodore, Dave Watkins and Hon Secretary Lynette Turner - they know!

Chase Sailing Club is a great place to spend your leisure time, the scenery, the facilities and the friendships found are second to none, have fun and enjoy the summer months.

Humph.
